Some lucky enterprising company was able to scoop up GeorgeWBushLibrary.com when web developers who were chosen to build the site let it expire. The library had purchased the domain for $3000 originally. At the time of purchase the domain only had a few months left until expiration. Instead of renewing it at the time of purchase software developers opted to wait. The cost to reacquire the domain from the company who scooped it up was $35,000. The cost was apparently paid by the software developer not from funds set aside for the library.
Many domains expire everyday most however are worthless. Rare gems like these do however fall through the cracks. The problem is many developers or speculators have thousands of names all expiring at different times of the year. Managing and renewing these names on time can be a full time job in itself. Buying expired domains can be very quick since buyers can place a back order on a active domain and scoop it up quickly when it expires.
